Won't recognize CD Drive
My Dell Dimension 3100 has stopped recognizing my original Dell supplied CD drive. When I boot up, it thinks that there is a floppy drive installed ( which I don't have). I have another Dell - exactly the same and the drive works on it so I know the drive's OK. Also tried the cable from the working PC and still the same problem. Also tried a different CD drive in the non-working Dell and it's seen as a floppy drive as well. It's starting to look like a hardware problem with the interface on the system board but no error messages and it does seem to see the drive, it just thinks it's a floppy.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure where you're looking when you save the system does not see the drive. Are you checking system setup? That's the first place I'd look to see if anything is amiss. In there, you'll also find something that is set to expect a floppy drive, which is why you're getting that error.

Thanks for quick reply
In device manager, there's no CD drives present, but there is a floppy drive and controller ( which I don't have )
As well, in BIOS setup, there's no CD drive present. It's as if XP goes out, sees the CD drive but thinks it's a floppy.
Thanks

Boot to system setup and go through the screens carefully. Look at the Drives section. You do have a floppy controller, so what you need to do is just set the floppy drive to OFF. Next, you have two SATA connectors, so presuming you have just the one drive, Drive 0 should show your hard drive info. Your CD drive will be Drive 2, so make sure that's enabled.
