The screen freezes every time I try to open a file

I have a Dell Inspiron One and yesterday I was moving some files to another folder but the screen freezed, I had to turn off the pc and then I got this message "NOTICE - Hard Drive SELF MONITORING SYSTEM has reported that a parameter has exceeded its normal operating range. Dell recommends that you back up your data regularly. A parameter out of range may or may not indicate a potential hard drive problem." But I can't back up any file, the screen freezes after selecting any file. What can I do?

MJs_Princess,

The hard drive could be failing and will need to be replaced. Run the diagnostics on the hard drive. Post back the error message from the diags. Below is information to run the diags.  If you need information about running the diags click the link below and choose your computer from the list. You can choose to download the online manual.
