Second HDD too slow read speed Inspiron 17R 5737

Hi everyone! Thanks in advance.

Shortly, I installed Windows 8.1 on an SSD on my Dell Inpiron 17R (5737) on SATA port 0, moving the original HDD (TOSHIBA MQ01ABD100) to a caddy in the optical drive. Everything worked fine after a long night configuring everything. The only thing is that now the HDD has very slow read speeds. It writes fast as it used to be before (~30Mb/s), but the read speed is usually no faster than 3Mb/s. I can't even watch movies from the HDD or play any games, it is always lagging and everything takes forever to load or just move to the SSD.

This paragraph should explain the problem, but I will go into details here.

It was impossible to boot from the SSD if I hadn't moved the HDD. My BIOS has no boot order option, which makes this stuff so painful. The SSD works absolutely fine, windows is now running in Legacy mode (and doesn't work in UEFI, I suspect it's because of the image I installed it from). The HDD works, it writes fast, just the read speed is pathetic. I've searched every forum I found regarding this issue, and nothing helped.

Thanks again, and please help. I'm already considering trashing the HDD and getting a new one. It just seems unfair, because it was working before the SSD, so I know it is not faulty.

Problem solved.

I tested the HDD on Linux Mint 17 and it worked perfectly. Updating drivers from the Dell website, including Intel RST, fixed the problem.

It only worked after reinstalling Windows 8.1. I had tried this before, but nothing worked.

Thanks!

Hi Khin Baptista,

You said you installed Windows 8.1 from an image. My recommendation would be to restore the factory image to the SSD using the recovery discs you prepared when you first got your Inspiron 17R.

Just tried it today. Dell Factory Image refuses to install in the SSD, says "Your hard drive size is not supported for this process. Please use a hard drive at least 931 GB in size." This happens with both reinstall options, the one that only changes the C partition and the one that formats the drive entirely.

Any other suggestions?

(I tried to upload a picture of the screen with the message, but the image is too large. If you need to see it, just ask and I'll resize it)

You can perform a clean installation from a downloadable ISO of the Win 8 installer. That might be the best approach.

I reinstalled Windows 8.1 completely. I managed to make it work in UEFI now, but the HDD still doesn't work properly.

I think it is not because of the OS, but hardware related.

I will test the HDD in a friends PC to see if it is faulty. I'll also test it using Linux.

Any further ideas would be highly appreciated.

Thank you.

The Intel RST would be the best place to see if there is a hardware or software issue.

AND I spoke too soon.

I just booted my PC to see the HDD has **disappeared** (this happened before, when I installed Intel Rapid Storage Technology)

And now it is back to the same point. If I install Intell Rapid Storage Technology, the HDD disappears. If I uninstall Intel RST, it magically comes back, just extremely slow.

Yesterday, when it was working, and in Linux, the read speed is of about 50Mb/s, against maximum 4MB/s now.

WHY INTEL?? WHY?

Disappears where? BIOS, disk management, device manager?

November 26th, 2014 11:00

It disappears from Explorer and Disk Management. It appears in BIOS, and is hidden in device manager (only is shown if "show hidden devices" is enabled).

On its properties (from device manager) it says:

"Currently, this hardware device is not connected to the computer. (Code 45)

To fix this problem, reconnect this hardware device to the computer."

Is the BIOS set to legacy or UEFI?

Have you tried legacy?

November 27th, 2014 09:00

Yes, it was set up for Legacy when I created this thread.
