Samsung cd burner will not recognize cd-r or cd-rw

I have a dell dimension 4550 with a Samsung cd-r/rw drive (SW-240B).  It will play audio cds, but will not recognize cd-r or cd-rw when inserted.  (I keep getting the "insert blank cd" message when a new, blank cd is already in the drive.  I have already unistalled the drive and rebooted with no improvement.  Any ideas?

What burning program are you using? Was the drive working until recently? Do you remember installing any new programs or hardware?

I'm not sure what you mean by burner program.  Roxio is the program that came with Dell.  I have tried using both Napster and Windows Media Player.  I have loaded new programs, but does Roxio have an issue with SP2?  I did not try to burn a cd after that update.

Yes, Roxio version 5 is trashed by SP2. If that's what you have, you'll need to upgrade. If you have a newer version, then you should uninstall and reinstall it.

Ok, I may have messed up royally here.  Had Roxio 5 basic.  Searched the forum, one message string said to uninstall, go to roxio, update then get another update.  I went to uninstall, nothing showed and there was no uninstall in the Roxio program, so I deleted what I could find to the trash can, confirmed delete there, went to Roxio, which insisted I had not registered the program.  I tried to do that, then run the patch, and of course there is now no evidence of Roxio on in the programs section of my machine - although I get a number of hits when I run the search function.  Is there anyway of getting Roxio from Dell so I can try to upgrade?  (Of course my computer did NOT come with the software cds - why don't they do that any more?)  Or, am I out of luck and now have to purchase a cd burning program when I paid for one with this computer?

If you have Roxio 5 basic, then you need a new burner program. Nero OEM Suite, which is what I use, can be purchased for about $5.
