Recover files from dead thumb drive
A Kingston thumb drive is no longer being recognized by my Inspiron 3910 or my Sony bluray player, but other thumb drives are being recognized by the desktop and bluray player.
As the Kingston thumb drive is dead, are there any suggestions for free downloadable software that can recover files from the thumb drive?

Is the drive being detected by the computer and is listed under Disk Management? If so, it sounds like a corrupt file system. You can try using a program like Recuva to attempt to recover your files from the flash drive. Afterwards, delete the existing partition on the flash drive, create a new partition and format it with the appropriate file system.
If Disk Management isn't detecting the flash drive, or if Windows isn't listing it under Device Manager, then the flash drive has likely failed. Your only option at this point is to have a data recovery specialist examine the flash drive and attempt to recover the data, which may involve replacing on-board components or swapping the NAND chip with a donor drive. This is not a cheap service, and it's important to always keep good backups of important/irreplaceable data.
