Problems playing DVD's with SONY DVD+-RW AW-Q160S

my DVD player (SONY DVD+-RW AW-Q160S) does not play a lot of DVD's I have. These are original DVD's bought in offical stores. I have sent an e-mail to Dell support and they gave me a download link for problems with my audio. The problem is though that the DVD's are not recognized at all. I also talked to a support guy for half an hour (after waiting for half an hour) and he advised me to download PowerDVD and after that it should work again. He said he would call me back after half an hour so he did not have to wait for the download to be completed, unfortunatly he did not call back and it did not solve the problem. And unfortunatly the support desk can be called at times I have to work so the next time I can call is in about 2 weeks. I think I need a firmware update for my DVD player but I can not find anything like that for this type DVD player from Sony. Can anyone help me with dis problem or does anybody have simular problems ?

From what other computer buffs tell me, best to ditch Roxio and use PowerDVD or better, Nero. The first attempt to send me an NEC replacement drive for the Sony failed. But I should receive one tomorrow.. I ditched Roxio and have Nero 7 installed, so let's see what happens when I install the NEC drive - if it ever turns up. I've already taken out the HDD with Vista installed, and replaced it with another Seagate Barracuda, and installed XP on it (if you ever do this remember to disable the RAID setting in the BIOS setup, otherwise you get a blue screen when trying to install XP). Now all my programs are up and running again. I'll put the Vista drive back in a years time when it is compatible with things like my Laserjet printer (under Vista I have to reboot after printing a document, otherwise I can only print the same document!).

Thanks- the service technician definately didn't say that- he rang for help but couldn't resolve the issue. Actually, i have asked for a refund, but am still awaiting a response from Customer Service (though they said i'd get a call back within the hour). Do appreciate your idea, but I have had it with Dell, so I feel at this stage I won't be trying an de-installation process. All the best for now.And thanks for your response again.

Without to much troubles Dell offered me a new device to. I asked for it after a couple of e-mails. I called them once but that doesn't work at all. I referred to this forum, maybe that helped for getting a new device easily. I don't know how soon I will get my new device but I hope not to get to much trouble with it, I will wait and see.....

I'm pleased to say Dell swapped the Sony drive with one from Toshiba, all now works ok.  I had to jump through a few hoops to get a replacement (and waste a lot of my time), on the plus side I found phone support very good, very speedy delivery of the replacement drive, courier delivered on time.

I am please to say that after a couple of emails and me mentioning that other customers on the forum have had the same problem, Dell have agreed to replace my DVD drive with an NEC one.  Should be here tomorrow.  I also gave them my work address and not home address and they seem to be ok delivering it to work.
I will post back again to confirm whether the new drive works or not.
As for other customers, push for a replacement drive.  They did mine without to much badgering.
regards,

Good to hear your replacement drive arrived and works. I'm still waiting on mine. It should have arrived by courier last Tuesday, but no courier showed up. Apologies from Dell. Then it was supposed to arrive yesterday (Monday) by courier - but again, nothing arrived. So I've stayed at home for two whole days for nowt! I'm thinking of just buying my own - it would be more cost affective! As the tech support guy I talk with is in India (I assume), and I live in the UK, obviously there is some breakdown in communication.

The NEC drive finally arrived. And all the DVDs that refused to load with the Sony now work fine. I'm glad this episode has finally concluded. It has taken a month of emails and phone calls and two non-deliveries. Phew! Robert

Much appreciation to y'all for posting the positive outcome. Dell seem to have become a bit more responsive with respect to replacement hardware. It's an extremely small price for them to pay for a good reputation.

Dell is currently trying to solve this issue it will be very helful if you can list some of the DVD titles that will not play on this thread, so far I can only reproduce this issue on one DVD Titile which is lord of the rings.

OK, here are some DVD titles: 1. El Crimen del Padre Amaro/The Crime of Father Amaro. 2. The Blue Planet Series (BBC). 3X DVDs. 3. Band of Brothers. 6X DVDs. These came out of the 15 or so DVDs (Region 2) I tried - I have many more that I did not try before the Sony was replaced. Both the Sony and the replacement NEC drives arrived with Region 1 selected, even although these are UK (Region 2) Dell PCs! Of course, with the freely available DVD43 program (all of 270K), these region problems just disappear! Robert

this week I received the new device from Dell, a Philips, all my problems are solved now. I did not have to do anything special. I replaced the Sony one and turned my computer on and it worked right away. One of the titles that did not work is Gladiator. I live in Europe though so I have a different region, I don't know if that matters ?

I have experienced exaclty the same problem with the Sony drive, and my diagnosis is that it will not read DUAL LAYER DVDs. Many film DVDs are duual layer (up to 8.5G) and now the latest PC games are dual layer (and so fit on one disc). The drive is fine with CDs and single layer DVDs.

The helpful people at Dell have done a pointless OS restore on my PC, kept me on the phone on 5 occasions now for a total of 4 hours, and have eventually announced that the Sony drive is not a dual layer drive. They are wrong. Almost any modern DVD drive should be able to READ dual layer DVDs, and I don't care if it can burn one or not. With this, they transferred me to their parts upgrade department so that I could purchase a suitable drive!

I've decided to just buy a new DVD drive. It's much easier. Dell Support is wrongly named.
