I don't have your computer model but in general you just install the SATA hard drive then initialize and partition it in Disk Management. This works in XPS 8700 and 8910 machines I do have.

I have TWO models of E5570 here, ONE has the i7-6820HQ in it and ONE with the i5-6300U. This story gets confusing so follow along. The i7 one in BIOS it shows me the boxes to check for the M.2 NVME and ALSO the HDD also which is a plug in, on the mobo. NOW, on the i5 one in BIOS it DOES NOT have the HDD box at all, so it does not even show it, on the i7 one I been able to check BOTH boxes, then I was able to CHOOSE to boot to NVME and also I been able to add a Western Digital 1TB SSD to that HDD spot, I had to remove the M2 bracket thing on the end that has the half-U notch and let the NVME lay-over the top of the SSD and used like a rubber spacer to help hold down the NVME on top of the SSD so it didn't move around when I put the back case lid back on it, so that idea WORKED and I am running both the NVME for the main boot using the Samsung 970 EVO Plus and getting some 3200 mbps read, 3200 mbps write and also yes my 2nd storage that fast SSD also. NOW when I tried this on the i5 one it will just NOT work, in BIOS, I upgraded and have THE SAME BIOS on both E5570 units, same identical bios but for some UNKNOWN reason just the i5 one will NOT show up the HDD box to check so that said when I plug in the HDD cable, I mean WITHOUT even hooking up and SSD at all, to try it out the laptop just does some kind of one-blink on boot up and never boots up at all, just shuts down the same second it boots up. I never figured this one out because they have the SAME BIOS version, just the i5 one won't let me do the HDD as it does not have the box at all in bios for it. I can ALSO say the only DIFFERENCE between the two mobo's is the i5 one has that SM thing special secure card slot thing, for the high security feature, the i7 one DOES NOT. BOTH use the same battery, the mobo looks the same though, but the i7 has that heavier heasink-fan thing due to the R7 Radeon graphics, where the i5 one had the lesser HD520 graphics. So all I can do is share those tips, I do not know what can cause the bios, having the SAME version on both laptops to just NOT show the HDD at all on one but shows it on the other!
