New SSD - recovery usb loop
Hi guys,
I bought a Dell XPS 8500 for my son as a starter PC, it came with no hard drive,
I installed a crucial SSD - this is recognised in BIOS and no faults found.
I have no DVD so installed recovery media on USB following dells instructions.
When i boot from this in either legacy or UEFI it goes to the recovery & restore.
the smart repair can find master boot disck but no drives??
then I've been going in circles for the last 3 hours!!!
I either get 'media test failure' or if i select other boot mode i get no bootable drive found.
please help!!!

How are you able to create a recovery media when you don't have a hard drive?

hi you can use a app on a different computer - i followed the instructions here,
www.dell.com/.../how-to-create-and-use-the-dell-recovery--restore-usb-drive
but sadly i can't get it to install the OS on the new ssd,
can anyone help? Or do i just request the discs from dell or purchase a retail copy.
I've been using macs for the last decade so its a complete re-learning for me

Which OS came on the PC originally?
Was it ever upgraded to Windows 10?

Hi, thanks for your reply
it came with windows 7 - i do believe the previous owner has tried to upgrade it to windows 7,
I've ordered the windows 7 recovery disc - if it has been upgraded to windows 10 will the disc still work?
