New Hard Drive

Hi, Can someone please help me. I need a new hard drive as my old one has died. When I attach my new drive what will happen and what happens to my Windows that I own on my old hard drive. How do I boot my laptop with a new hard drive if they don't come with operating systems on them? If there is an easy solution please help me.

My laptop won't boot so I can't back anything up. I am not worried about lost files, just my operating system. Do I have to buy a new Windows OS or can I use the one I already own, if so how on earth would I find my product key if laptop won't boot?

Thanks

How do you know the drive has died? Not booting doesn't always mean the drive has failed. Lots of other things could be wrong. What version of windows do you have and what model computer?

You own windows for that computer and you don't have to buy it again but you do have to reinstall windows using your Dell reinstallation disk. If you did not get a reinstall disk you can download windows if you had windows 8 or 10. Best thing to do is to get someone to help if possible. You have to install the drive internally, not just attach it. You manual will have instructions on installing a new drive. Dell has instructions on reinstalling windows here--

The only part that applies to a new hard drive is Manual Reinstallation

IMO if your laptop is over 3-4 years old you should consider replacing it instead of fixing it. Laptops do not last as long as desktops and can be bought for less than a few years ago. Laptop repairs usually cost more than buying a new one.
