"New bad clusters were found on the source volume. These clusters were not backed up. (0x8078007D)”

XPS One 2720 Service Tag:  | Express Service Code:

Sometimes my backup fails with the message below. Also sometimes I get an error message at the end of a shutdown stating trouble at a location similar to below but it quickly disappears. The other troubling symptoms are that the hard drive will 100% busy for long periods of and nothing much else can go on.

“New bad clusters were found on the source volume. These clusters were not backed up.

(0x8078007D)”

How are they new if found frequently?

Regular disk scans reported all is normal and my security software finds no problems. Both windows 10 and McAfee are/were up to date. The experts at a local branch of a computer chain ran their tests, said they found a few bugs, and was fixed – WRONG. Finally I went to DELL Support Assist, Hardware Checkup, System Scans, Hard Drive (Manual), and it said, “Linear Read Test WHD38-CWD Failed.”

It passed on some other tests such as Funnel Seek test and Random Seek test. SO:

1)     Is it really a bad disk vice memory or operating system?

2)     Is there a way to quarantine some bad sectors? Or

3)     Any other thoughts?

Hi Dave0718,

Thank you for the message.

If you have taken the back-up of the data, we would suggest you to re-install the operating system. So that if this is caused because of corrupt operating system, it would be resolved.

If the above issue still occurs then it would be because of bad sectors on the hard drive and it would need replacing.

Please click my DELL-username and send me a Private Message with the Dell Service Tag number if you have any query.

The linear read test fail means a bad drive.  Replace the hard drive with a new one.
