Need to delete all memory

I am selling my laptop, but before I can I need to delete everything of mine off of it. I figured out how to do it, but now my computer won't turn on. I bought a new battery and a new charger, but the charger isn't working and now i've lost the old one.

Does anyone have any advice? I tried taking out the battery and holding the power button for 30 seconds. Nothing happened.

Hi jkeppl1,

You have not provided the model of your laptop, but I suppose it's pretty old. The general approach in this situation would be to remove the hard drive, put it in an external hard drive case, plug that case into the USB port of another PC and run your utility. Since the laptop won't even turn on, however, my suggestion would be to simply sell it without a hard drive, since even a working older laptop is not going to be worth much more than $50 any way, much less one that won't turn on.

I recently got an Inspiron N5010 with no hard drive that was not turning on for free. I fixed the problem, installed a $15 hard drive, installed Windows 7 and gave it to a family member. The thing runs beautifully.

okay I'm going to try to buy an external hard drive and plug it into another computer but I have a few questions.

first, are these what you're talking about?

accessories.us.dell.com/.../category.aspx;category_id=5683&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&ST=+hard%20+drive%20+case&dgc=ST&cid=263330&lid=4770651&acd=123098073120560

Do you have a suggestion of a cheap-but-good external hard drive. The computer is a dell inspiron 1520 and I have an offer of $88 dollars from sellmylaptop.com, so I'm not looking to spend too much more money on fixing it up.

Does the laptop I hook up the external hard drive to have to be a pc or can it be a mac?

Once I get the hard drive connected to a computer, can I wipe it completely clean from there and just put it back in the old dell and then maybe return the external hard drive?

Your link doesn't work so I'm not sure what that is. I'm referring to an external hard drive enclosure, such as this one from Amazon. But you could purchase locally and then of course return it when you're done. Best Buy has them.

Once wiped, the drive can be put back into the laptop for sale.
