NEC ND-1100A RW Problem

I am having a problem with my NEC ND-1100a in my 4600.

I cannot burn DVD + RW at all.  I have flashed the drive with the new firmware.  I have verified that I have the most recent update of Easy CD Creator Platinum 5, and I have tried DVD + RW media from Fuji, Sony, and Memorex.

The drive works just fine in every other way.  I can play DVD's and CD's.  I can burn and read CD-R, CD-RW, and DVD +R with no problems at all.

Dell tech service has been very little help although I have worked through all of the things they have asked for me to do (have run all diagostics with no problem, have cleared NVRAM, have unistalled and reinstalled software, have removed everything from startup, etc.)  The only thing that I have refused to do so far is to reinstall/repair Windows since I find it hard to believe that could be the problem since everything else about the drive is working fine except fro DVD + RW.

Can anyone make any suggestions?

I haven't made any progress in resolving the problem that I described in my first message (i.e. NEC 1100a drive will not burn DVD + RW at all, but will do everything else it is supposed to do with no problem at all).  I still am resisting the windows XP repair/install since it is such a hassle.  Since everything else about the drive seems OK, could the DVD R/W problem really be a windows problem?

One other strange thing about the drive - it is drive E: on my system with a CD ROM  drive located at D:.  The NEC is the secondary slave.  When I open "My Computer" and the open the NEC 1100a (E:) drive it opens what appears to be what would normally look like blank media on any other drive I have ever seen - what is strange is that it will do this even if there is no media at all in the drive.  Is this normal?  If not, what is going on?

I would appreciate any help or ideas.
