Latitude D800 - New internal dvd r/w reads ok but won't write

I bought a used cd r/w dvd r/w internal drive to replace my cd r/w dvd r on my Dell Latitude D800 with XP Pro and SP3

An Optiarc DVD+RW AD-5540A using the Cdr4_xp.sys driver which XP says it right.

DVDs are Memorex DVD+R 16K

My computer lists it as CD Drive when i put in a blank DVD and DVD R/W Drive when it is empty.

If I look at properties when a DVD in loaded it shows empty disk as full.

Unit works ok on all other functions.

Windows XP can write to CD-R discs, but it cannot write to DVD discs. You need a third party application, but there are some free ones, such as ImgBurn.

Hi Snakester,

In XP, unfortunately, there are a number of possible causes, such as the one described here.

You said you checked the driver but do you see an exclamation point in device manager?

The other possibility is the discs themselves. I'm not a fan of Memorex, so it might be worth checking another brand.

i am using sp3 on xp pro. i have not tried another brand but i shouldn't have bought memorex as i have had problems with them before.

the version of roxio i have is a cd r/w burner - basic 5 so i ordered a copy of basic 6 and will try that when it arrives. had to go to amazon as corel won't help me.

is the dvd r/w in a later version of sp3?. this is my business computer (freelance programming) so i hesitate to add anything i don't need.

there is no ! in device manager that i could find. is Cdr_xp the one i should be using.

thanks

Problem was with software. I found a copy of Roxio 6 online and all appears to be working fine.

Thank you all
