Is it so difficult to plug a new sata disk in XPS8500 ?

Hi everybody,

My Bios Configuration :

Boot : RAID / UEFI

Sata  0 : seagate 2To  (Windows 8)

Sata  5 : PLDS DVD xxxx

Sata 2 : seagate 1To the one i want to install

Sata 3 : none

mSata 1 : Samsung SSD 32 Mo (Windows 8)

I've tried many things but nothing works. The only thing is in Disk Management tool, i see my inital 2To disk as " drive 0/in line " so all is ok but the second disk is marked " drive 1/unknown/not initialized/not allocated " with 2To size (as i said the drive is 1To !!!  Thank you RAID0 ;))  and a windows ask me to initialize the disk with 2 options : 1 - Boot sector 2 - GPT . Neither works just say " block defects".

Anyone in this place could help me to do normaly such  a simple thing :  add a drive in a PC !

Tanks for any reply.

HL.

Just an important precision :

I've efffectivly used Seatools to view the state of my drives but the menu option i tell in my post before was in Intel RST boot menu which can be view then activate with ctrl-i keys. The "Legacy Boot" option must be set on bios previoulsy to see it at boot.

Hi HL,

Bad blocks implies a problem with the drive. Please run a DOS-based diagnostic utility, such as SeaTools to check the integrity of the hard drive.

Hi Opsrey,

Glad to see you again (last time was 1,5 year ago !)

The diagnostocs are ok (with Seatools / DOS version) ....

I think because of the RAID0 bios configuration UEFI thinks this second drive is for RAID0 and as i said my first bootable drive is 2To and the second drive (i want add) is 1To and Disk Manager sees it with 2To.

I can't be sure of that but this is my conclusion. So what must i do ?

Sorry i don't  know how edit my new posts so a new post :again  i precise another 1To drive.

So i try with 2 different 1To drive who are fully functionals (they were used in RAID0 / Windows 7 before) and the reuslt is the same.

I've  finally resoled my problem. It was not a block defect problem

We must first the burn iso SeaTools for DOS and then boot with it on CDROM.

(Apparently now when at start i push F2 key the SeaTools menu appear.)

So at  boot (F2 key ) the product list all the physical drives (i saw my new 1To drive like before : seen as a RAID0 attached drive)

A menu option permit to delete a RAID0 attached disk. I did it, then reboot,  and after, in Windows, the Disk Manager permit me to format the drive and assign a letter without "block defect" windows like before. Now i can plainly use my 2nd 1To drive.

Thanks for your help Osprey.

Perfect! SeaTools is a great utility. I keep it handy whenever I'm helping others with drive problems.
