How do I "KNOW" my backup to external drive worked?

I've tried to copy pictures etc to different thumb drives and when i go to transfer to a video frame i have- they haven't been copied- I've done it before and they were fine- but now I'm wondering- is my laptop not working for backups either? Surely ALL the thumbdrives can't be defective. And I have a cd/dvd drive- but it says "not enough room - yet it won't let me continue on a 2nd or 3rd dvd.-- (windows 8.1)

Another question I have is I have OLDER Photo CD's (from Kodak and a drugstore) with many pictures on them- this laptop seems unable to read them-- I'd like to transfer them to thumbdrives since new laptops (and yes- I do prefer a laptop-not a tablet)-- are not providing those dvd/cd drives anymore. So anyone have a solution for that? Were those older cd's a different format ?

First thing to do, on a previously used flash (thumb) drive is to format it.  That will "Usually" confirm that its good.  Then when you copy whatever to it to verify if you need to, try opening it with the program that opens it on the PC.

This can be an issue on full drive disc images (e.g. using a backup program such as the free and popular Macrium Reflect).  Macrium has a verify function after it has done a disc image (backup) to a separate drive.  Otherwise the only way to know if the backup is good is to do a restore to another drive and then boot from that drive.  Sort of a hassle but if you want to know its good the only real way to do it.

As far as the CD's, older CD's can get corrupted (various ways) and will no longer read.  They are not "permanent" as most believe.  Some CD/DVD drives may not read them but another might.  I would take them to a friend who has a PC with a CD/DVD drive and try them on the friends drive.
