HL-DT-ST DVD+RW GH50N in an Inspiron 546 Minitower

Drive will not read a CD.  Tried regedit fix with no go.  No UpperFilters or LowerFilters entry in right panel.  I go into Device Manager and it says the DVD / CD drive is working properly.  Any new suggestions?  Thanks, Ben

I did not ignore it.  That did not work.  I then tried the external drive I already had .  The drive worked on my wife's computer.

Then you should have written that you tried it and that it did not work.

You will want to verify that this external drive works on your wife's computer now and not a few days or months or years ago and that your wife's computer is the same operating system as yours. External USB drives may require installation of additional drivers not included in Windows.

Generally, you'll want to use a commercial CD such as Windows or Office etc to try.

If indeed the laser in the drive has gone bad, you need to buy a new drive.

Tried a Toshiba External SuperMulti Drive, Mod. No. PA3761U-1DV2, in USB port.  Will not read a good CD.  Device Manager says device is working properly.

Thank you

I asked you to try reading a commercial CD in your original drive, and you ignore it?
If you are not going to do as asked, this is a pointless venture.

Bye.
