HDD Fatal Error - Support Assist

Hi - having some issues with my Dell XPS L702X Laptop - Support Assist has been finding errors with my HDD. I'm out of warranty - I believe I have the original installation discs.

Obviously I have to buy a new HDD - is there two HDD ports or only the 1?

I've been looking at buying a Seagate SSHD 1TB 2.5inch SATA internal drive. Will this fit?

I'm a little bit worried about re-installation having not attempted it on this laptop - do I just use the install discs and it'll be fine? I don't have Dell Backup running as I don't have the space for it to do a backup.

Any help will be appreciated

Thanks

Rob

Hi Rob,

There are spaces for two hard drives. If you remove the cover from the back, both are accessible. Then you should be able to see what you have. So you do have the option of buying an SSD for the OS and an HDD for your programs and files. The hybrid drive, however, is a simple compromise that will still enable much faster performance as compared to a conventional HDD.

Any standard 2.5" hard drive should fit. There are regular and slim versions of that Seagate drive. There is no need to buy the slim version.

For reinstalling the OS, first you'll need to back up your important files, documents, pictures, etc. Normally a large capacity flash drive works fine for this purpose. Then install the new drive and follow the link below to the OS installation guide for the Windows reinstallation.

Hey - thank you so much for your reply. I'll have a go at swapping over the HDD soon.

Hopefully it's not going to be too painful to set it all up

Cheers
