have inspiron 1721

and smart is saying hard disk needs repaired or replaced. is there a function to try and repair first?

Best to run Dell Diagnostics extended custom test on the hard drive.

1. Restart the computer.
2. As the computer boots, press <F12> when the Dell Splash Screen appears.
3. At the One Time Boot menu, press the <Down> arrow key to highlight Diagnostics and press <enter>
4. A graphical menu listing all discovered devices in the system is now displayed.
5. Select Hard Drive and click Run Tests to start diagnostics.

After running Diagnostics, report back with the error that's shown.

I did a backup to external drive but nothing I can try to repair it first?

  Error code  2000-0148, indicates a failing/failed hard drive, you need to replace ASAP, followed by reinstalling Windows and loading all the drivers and applications.

 First back up any files and folders you need save, to other media, eg a USB flash drive, or an USB external hard drive.
