'Hardware Interrupts" Dell Dim 2350 PIO to DMA, help!

ok..  i currently have "Hardware interrupts" taking up alot of CPU at times, found this out by using Process explorer , when i have this problem my harddrive light comes on in the front of my PC, wich lead me to check my IDE controllers under device manager.. my Primary IDE controller is set to DMA if avalible but its current transfer mode is PIO, my secondary IDE controller is set to DMA and DMA ultra , i read that PIO is alot slower and can cause hardware interrupts.

i also read that uninstalling the driver and reinstalling it can fix the problem, but im not sure wich driver to uninstal/where to uninstall it at and if i uninstall it do i update it right away or do i reboot and let windows reinstall it?

a bit confused... anyone know how to do this?

Hi, Lemonfan:

You're trying to fix the symptom rather than the problem. The most common causes of a hard drive reverting to PIO mode are:

  1. The drive was installed without the jumper set to cable select (if you installed the drive).
  2. The drive is not turned on in the BIOS (boot to the BIOS, F2, and check this).
  3. The IDE cable is loose or bad (open the case and re-seat the cable at both ends).
  4. The drive is experiencing errors (run the extended test on your hard drive).
