Hard drive
I have a Dell Dimension 2400 that I am trying to restore. At first when I use a Windows XP installation disk it would tell me the partition was not Windows XP compatible. I used Ubuntu on a flash drive but the hard drive wouldn't show on Ubuntu. I restarted the computer without the flash drive and it showed:
- Normal
- Diskette drive
- IDE CD-ROM Device
- System Setup
- IDE Drive Diagnostics
- Boot to Utility Partition
When I booted the CD of Windows XP it said that there where no disks to install to.
Please help! :emotion-36:

Hi,
What happens when / if you select #1 "Normal"? Does the system attempt to boot onto a hard drive? I would also recommend trying #5 to try running the diagnostics.
You could also go into your System Setup (BIOS) to see whether the system's BIOS is recognizing the existence of a hard drive. (I'm assuming you've physically confirmed there is a HDD in the system, and checked the cables to make sure it has power and is connected to the motherboard).
If there is a hard drive in the system but the BIOS isn't registering it then try and reset the BIOS to factory defaults and see if that will cause it to "read" and recognize the drive at that point.
Hopefully the diagnostics and BIOS will show that the drive exists and resetting the BIOS will allow the system board to register it, but if the diagnostics come back as a failed test on the HDD then you may have to replace it, unfortunately.
Let us know what you find out and we'll see what other suggestions we can provide if none of the above works.
