Got BSOD error, ran diagnostics, got error code 2000-0146, tried to boot from different HDD, got same stop error
So my friend gave me his dell laptop. The thing would start up normally for a few days until it would give me a blue screen of death with the message "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME" constantly with no let up. I ran the diagnostics and got the error code 2000-0146. From what I have read, that error code means that the HDD is bad and needs to be replaced. So, to make sure it is the hard drive, I tried to boot from an old hard drive I had laying around through USB and windows gave me the same stop error. Could that mean it's a motherboard problem?

No, it doesn't -- unless the OS was installed onto that drive AND in the system in question, it won't work as a bootable drive.
Unplug the system, remove or disconnect the battery and hold the power button for about 30 sec. Power up and re-run the diagnostic - if the same error appears again, the drive is bad. Replace it.
