External microphone specification.

Hi, I have an out of warranty T1700. I would like to connect an external microphone to the mic socket(s). There is no information in the manual and Dell tech services refuse discussion. I want to avoid damaging my computer and ensure the best possible recording quality. Any advice? Thanks (in advance).
