DVD drive not reading CDs

Hi:

I am unable to read any CD in my DVD drive (Dell Latitude 810) that is perfectly happy to read and write DVDs.

Can anyone help me?

With best regards,

Exactly the same problem here (The drive is a Sony Q58A, which seems to be a rebadged LiteOn SOSW-8?3S. The notebook is a Latitude D820).

Strange thing is, that the first couple of days it worked correctly (burned several CD-RW's and DVD's).

Then it failed to spin up CD's correctly (CD-R, CD-RW, originals (data and audio)). It tries for some time, and then just gives up.
DVD's are recognized correctly, and I am able to burn them. This is why I suspect it to be a firmware problem (something in the lookup tables for media types perhaps).

The alternative firmwares I have tried so far do not resolve the problem (Original is UDS1, I tried the UYS2 and UYS3 versions, and the one from Lite-on).
I will probably return this thing to Dell to get a replacement.

I have finally figured out the problem. This is not a software problem, but a hardware problem. It seems that CD/DVD drives read these two types of media through different 'sensors' and the CD sensor in my hardware was damaged. Since my computer has a three year warranty, I got the drive changed and it is functioning fine.

Hope you can do the same.

Good Luck.
