Disk upgrades

I have a

Precision T7500

Service Tag: Service tag removed per privacy policy> | Express Service Code: Express service code removed per privacy policy> that was shipped December 2009. I have recently upgraded to Windows 10 and was thinking about installing a 2.5 inch 500Gb SSD (SATA 3) as a new boot disk and a 6Tb 3.5 inch disk for backup use. I will also have existing 2Tb and 1.3Tb disks that I intend to continue using.

Can you tell me whether this machine will work satisfactorily with the SATA III SSD and will I be able to access 6Tb space?

You will not see any improvement using an SATA 3 drive versus an SATA 2 drive since your comtroller only supports SATA 2. But honestly, there's very little practical difference in real world applications.

Yes, my comment about the controller pertains to the 6TB drive. Most newer systems will support drives over 2TB as long as you've got the Intel RST up to date and format using GPT. But 6TB is pushing things. A controller card will make this a cinch.

Thanks for the reply ... much appreciated.

Difference in speed between 2 and 3 on the SSD shouldn't be too noticeable? I am primarily looking for better boot speeds.

Your comment re possible controller relates to the 6Tb disk? I read a review where the person was mentioning only being able to access 2Tb. If system only allows access to 2Tb I need another controller?

Hi Jimmy Wood,

The motherboard supports SATA 2, so an SATA 3 SSD will work fine. For an HDD that size, it's possible you'll need a separate controller card, but there's no harm trying without one.
