DELL XPS L501X Hard Drive replacement
Lately, I've been receiving error messages like " SMART has detected a hard drive failure. Back up your data immediately."
I think there is no troubleshooting option available now and I've to replace my HDD with a new one. Do suggest if there is any. For a new HDD, I came across Hitachi Travelstar Z7K500 which has better specs and is available at a very good price. Some of its highlights:
- First 7200 RPM, 500GB in a 7mm, single-disk design
- Advanced Format, 512-byte emulation
- First 6Gb/s SATA interface on a mobile HDD
I'm just worried if I may face any compatibility issues as it has just 7mm height as compared to my older HDD which was 9.5 mm in height. I'll be delighted to know more about it and any other suggestions you may have.

All SATA drives are backward compatible -- and SATA6G matters only for SSDs. No single hard drive can sustain even 150 MBps -- let alone 3G/6G. The interface can, but mechanical hard drives cannot.

in order to mount a 7 mm drive, you may need a plastic spacer like the one shown below - otherwise the drive will work fine.

Thanks for the info. The hard drive I've talked about is SATA-III 6 gbps and my motherboard chipset is Intel PCH HM57. The compatibility guide given by HGST for this hard drive says the following:
It says that my chipset is not 6 gbps capable. Does this pose a problem? Will this hard drive work on my laptop then?
