D drive not available (has a question mark and code 45 in Device Manager)

My Alienware 17 R4 has 2 hard drives. Occasionally, the D drive appears in File Explorer with a question mark and isn't available. I've been able to correct this in the past by making sure I have the latest Windows and Dell updates.

This time, no luck. I can't figure out how to get my D drive recognized again. All of my data is on that drive.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Does the drive show up in the BIOS? Or is it disappearing there too some times? Also, Code 45 means the device is not connected to the computer... so this could mean a bad drive or hopefully the drive just needs to be reconnected. The easiest attempt at a fix would be disconnecting/reconnecting the drive.

Here is a link to the Service Manual w/ steps to perform this (at this link you will need to click on Service Manual PDF). Another option before trying to reconnect the drive would be to try and run diagnostics by pressing F12 at bootup before the Windows Screen. If the drive does show up again in Windows (regardless of how), I highly recommend getting all the data you can off of it, just in case this turns out to be a controller issue (but hopefully it is just a loose cable).

Best regards,

Brad
