Assuming you cannot install the SSD into the laptop along with the laptop's HDD, you need a SATA to USB adapter like this: www.newegg.com/.../Product.aspx. If you buy a Samsung SSD it comes with Samsung Data Migration software to clone your HDD. Once your HDD is cloned you just replace it with the SSD.

It quite easy to transfer your data and OS to the 1TB SSD drive as long as you have the third party cloning software, like AOMEI Backupper Standard (it's free). If you have two hard drive slots, you can clone HDD to SSD: www.backup-utility.com/.../clone-hdd-to-ssd-without-sata-to-usb-cable-0708.html  drive with simple steps:

1. Make sure you have connected the SSD drive correctly. open the program, select Clone > Disk Clone.

2. Edit the Task Name, select the HDD as source disk in the Step1 and choose SSD drive as destination disk in the Step2.

3. Click Start Clone.

Tips: Make sure you have ticked Align partition to optimize for SSD.

If you have only one hard drive slot, you can backup HDD first to external hard drive, then shut down your PC, take out the HDD and put 1TB SSD drive into the slot, boot your computer with the bootable media created by this program, then restore the disk backup image to SSD drive. All is done. hope it's helpful.
