755 HD Toast?

I get a message that my HD is bad posted in the upper left corner white letters black screen.

all I did was pull out 1 Mem stick get the numbers then put it back in,I did not start the unit with 1 stick out. Put the stick the stick back in ...it did give me some trouble maybe I should put some Thermal paste  on it but I tried again and it went in double check the mem stick latch, secure.  Will it go bad that fast 2 years not much use I was always told WD the wayh to go. In there now is WD 1TB standard specs. I ordered another last night . Should I have asked here first for the best HD out there. All Seagates had no enclosure     HELP  I will buy another at your recommendation

Fred,

Removing the memory module should not have had any impact on the hard drive. So I'm not yet convinced you have a hard drive problem.

When you boot the system, can you get to the F12 utility menu or the F2 system setup menu? Both of those should be accessible even if the hard drive is bad. If you can access the F12 menu, try getting into the Dell diagnostics and test the system.

Hi Kmann,

Do you have an Optiplex 755 running Windows 7? What is the EXACT error message?

I assume your hard drive is SATA. There's no "best" drive out there. They're all about the same and should function equally well.

Hi there Osprey4.  Yes the OS is Win 7 HP nothing special about this unit

ATX 400 PSU

240GB Kingston SSD

EVGA GTX 640

WD Biue 1TB

Oh I changed out the Cd went with LG something. I can't get the message exactly it's gone in a blink. Moved it to another room so I dont stand too long. I dont use this drive often maybe its rusted in there. Have not tried any quick fixes other then pull the mem stick  and ensure its seated all looks good . And now for your chance to play with my 755. send some good ones

Hello Osprey4.  Well all seems to be good I still cannot get a snap shot of the screen, what happened to the good ol days when ya hit the DOS Comd  pause screen. Anyway yes I went into F2 & F12 ran the tests I was all over the HDD moving & copying.  The Bios is up to date everything seems good except for the speed is driving me nuts. I'm playing nice with this one. So now I have

Dell Optiplex 755                           SIIG 5.1 Sound Card

ATX 400W PSU                             Win 7 Home Premium

LG optical drive                               Windows Office 2013

8GB of Crucial ram                          Webroot Antivirus/malwear

480GB Kingston Hyper X SSD

1TB WD Blue SSHDD                     And I would like to thank you all for this rebuild.  Kmann

Fred,

I'm actually old enough to remember booting to DOS. :emotion-2:

So I assume the hard drive test ran ok? What exactly is wrong with the speed, too slow?
