UC 5.3.1.1279 SP1 - Any experiences?

Hi there,

I've installed/updated the EX UserCache in a test environment (server and client were both on 5.3.1171, while the client is a German WinXP). The update gives no problem.
- When just updating the server, the client keeps on working fine.
- When I updated the client PC afterwards, no new message is cached and shortcutted messages can't be opened.
- When deleting the cache and just recreating doesn't work either.

In the log it says: "Cannot get shortcut message from EmailXtender server: E5 Server cannot get Message" (it worked with the previous version).

There was a special section in the release notes that an update is fine from this version. From older version (does anybody know what GA means in this connection?), one has to reinstall especially the clients! -> This would mean a major interruption.

Has anybody tested the update and has other experiences?

Best regards,
Jochen.

Hi everbody,

have tested my UserCache installation in a test environment further. I've made some experiences I'd like to share (and prompt for responses)! ;-)

--- Server ---
As mentioned before, I had just updated the UserCache Front-End server. Although the installation finished successfully, it didn't work at all.

I have finally deinstalled the UserCache completly. Even after the deinstallation, the program files and the IIS virtual directory were still available. After remoing them, a reboot and a fresh install of UC 4.7 SP1, things worked like a charm.

--- Clients CACHEMOD + CACHEDIR ---
A client of mine requires to change the UC folder path to a non-system drive.
1) This can only be done by a installation from command prompt. The installation just runs through.
2) I wanted to change the INSTALLDIR. But when Outlook was opened, I got an error saying C:\%programs%\EMC Archive Services For Email\User Cache Client\MailboxExpress.exe could not be found. - I tried various things... installing it in the default directory is working.
3) With a fresh install by command promt, I got the UC folder path changed. For this user only!?! When other users log onto the PC, they just store the UserCache again in the Profile under Documents and Settings\%User%\Application Data\EMC\IMSCache - I don't get it to work so that all users have their UserCache data stored somewhere else. - By the way, the Config.xml stays in the original place no matter where the UserCache data is stored.

While UserCache convinces me with the old features - I think there is an improved speed as well -, I am very dissatisfied with the new feature CACHEDIR. I would have hoped that the update (well never mind update, always reinstall UC and reboot often) and the features are documented better: But one has to read all documents very well to try to make some reason from it.

Best regards,
Jochen.

RE the Clients CACHEMOD + CACHEDIR
I have found that if a user has local Admin Rights the Settings work as expected. Non admins it is ignored and placed in the Application settings area of the user profile.

Delete the "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\EMC\EmailXtender\Message_Store" key and get the user to re logon and start out look. If you have moved the Dir between versions. This registry will have to old settings.

for non admins you will need to add the DBMailBoxPath, DBRootPath & LogFilePath manually to match your "CACHEMOD + CACHEDIR" with some sort of script.

Hi Jochen,

we had some similar issues here:

Updating of UserCache didn't work as expected. We had to uninstall the old version first and then after the reinstall of the new version, everything works fine.

Regarding the change of the installation directory, we had the same issue with the ex search plugin (4.81.409).

Best regards

Guido
