Shortcutting in Lotus Domino

After archiving and shortcutting mail for a user database (.nsf), the database does not shrink in size even after compaction.

EmailXtract reported successful completion of the shortcut task, and indicated the number and size of messages shortcut.
How can you verify that shortcuts are actually working against the server?

Have you been able to shortcut a large no. of heavy mails with attachments. May be the shortcut things are too small and you have recd. more mails by the time you compacted them.

From just archiving, it won't reduce size. In that case, you need to run the delete task to delete from nsf and then the size would get reduced.

Another way to check that could be to check the size of an email which had some attachments and now gets the Archived message OR shortcut indication from EX.

The size of the mail should give some indication.

For a very small test mailbox, we added two messages with large attachments, and checked the total size. Then, we archived the messages and ran a shortcut task for all messages, checking the size of the server-side database again. Finally, we ran a compact and did a final size check - the size did not decrease.

My understanding is that even against Notes, shortcutting should reduce the size on the server without the need for deletion.

Is there a way to check the size on the email on the client without retrieving the message and thus invalidating the results?

I have not worked much on Lotus but even on Exchange: if a attachment based mail has been shortcut, just go to the mail and check the attachment size is 173 B(that's what I have noticed on mails on my Exchange/Outlook 2007 setup). Should be same for attachments of nsf as well.

On the client today, I saw the size of shortcut mails and it is in KB's even with attachments i.e. the size of the file definetely decrease if shortcuts are created.

Check if you have shortcut on the nsf OR your mailbox replicates to lcal nsf etc.

On Lotus client you will see no change what so ever after the emails are shortcut, that is a feature. Only on domino you will be able to see the change in size of the users mailbox. Compation is needed to claim white space.

If you need more details anuj you know where to catch me :)
