Shortcutted messages cannot be opened
Hello,
We have recently installed EX 4.81.409 SP1 in our production environment.
Journaling works fine, We have archived/shortcutted one (dummy) user's messages. Opening the shortuctted messages returns a shortcut error:
"The message selected is archived & shortcutted and cannot currently be retrieved (shortcuts are not availbale when Outlook is offline)."
However Outlook isn't offline. The message can be retreived from the archive while using the search plugin. I think it's a permissions issue, but don't know where/what to look for. I've searched through the forum/knowledge base, but didn't find a conclusive answer.
Does anybody have any idea where to look to resolve this?
Kind regards,
Duncan

- you don't use Outlook Exchange cache mode?! Check the EXAdminGuide 7-9.
- Go through the steps 7-8 "You can see the shortcut icon through Microsoft Outlook but you cannot open the shortcut message".
- Are there DCom errors logged on the EX server?
- I would check that the custom attribut of your AD-contact (EmailXtender: Needs to look like http://MyEmailXtenderServer/EXShortcut/Query.asp) is okay.
I had a problem with the DCOM permissions... and when this was solved the retrieval of the shortcuts in Outlook worked fine.

Jochen.

We use Outlook 2002 as client. On the EX server we use Outlook 2003 but cache mode isn't enabled.
We have gone through the steps you mention. We can check once more, but I think the DCOM settings (IWAM & IUSR) are set properly.
The custom attribute of the AD Contact is also set properly.
Still there are DCOM errors on the EX server. What did you change in ExExchangeMgr?
First, we have to grab some lunch, and then continue to check DCOM again.
Hope to hear from you.
Regards,
Duncan

When opening a shortcutted email in Outlook, the EX contact is asked for the URL and requests the item via IIS into the mailbox (DCOM is used for access over the network).
In ExExchangeMailBox, I have also under "Launch and Activate Permissions" IUSR, IWAM and the ex service account entered with all possible settings"Allow".
Has your service account has the correct permissions on Exchange and AD (putting the archived item back into the mailbox)? I am quite sure you problem is in connection with the DCOM error. When my DCOM error was gone, the shortcuts opened perfectly.
If nothing helps, I would suggest opening an EMC support call - they should be able to help quickly with a WebEx.

in ExExchangeMgr every setting in "Launch and Activate Permissions" and "Access Permissions" is "Allowed" for IUSR, IWAM and the EX service account.
I know, the DCOM things are cumbersome to go through. In a support incident an EMC technician went through our settings and changed some settings further than were documented. So "Allow" is the setting to enter...
Best regards,
Jochen.

We checked the settings and they are set properly. We have decided to reboot te EX server, and then we'll see what happens when we try to retrieve the shortcutted messages.
Why is it that when we retrieve the messages when we use the ExSearchPlugin, the message are retrieved perfectly? Doesn't this use DCOM?

Some good news, finally...
Because I was sure that our DCOM settings were correct, I decided to restart the COM+ service. Probably because we forgot to close the Outlook client on the EX server before restarting the service, Outlook wouldn't start afterwards. I then decided to restart the EX server. After the server was back online I tried to restrieve some shortcutted messages/attachments from a workstation. Now we could retrieve the messages/attachments succesfully.
Some issues still exist, and one of them is that it takes about 25 seconds before the first shortcutted message/attachment is retrieved (we get an hour glass). The next message is retrieved almost instantly. After restarting the Outlook client the issue is back. I haven't found an answer for that on the forum/knowledge base. Do you have any idea how I can resolve this?
The other issue is about OWA shortcutting but for that we have to reboot the Exchange cluster. That will be done this weekend.
Thanks for you help so far.
Kind regards,
Duncan
