Archiving does not start

Windows 2003 SP2, Exchange 2007, Outlook 2003 on EX server, EX 4.81.

Everything gets installed quickly. When I run an EmailXtract task for archving a mailbox, nothing happens i.e. it shows that it has started the task but then no mails get archived, there is no error. It stays like that for ages. I stopped all EX services but it did not help. I restarted the EX server and after restarting noticed two strange things:

1. All EX services were set to Automatic but they never started. I had to start them manually.
2. The EX tasks did not get terminated even after restarting EX server but there was no progress as well. WhenI try to stop them again, it gives a message that the task is collecting previous information.

Any clues please.

Hi Anuj,

Check out the log messages to see why services didn't start automatically. Alternatively just do a repair install, in case you do not know how to do it I have written a support note esg98921 few days back which is waiting for approval before that gets published.

EX tasks are running though EmailXtract application which continue to run even after the restart of services (as opposed to EX Admin GUI).

In any case first attempt will be to do repair install and then see if that helps. Some time few binaries does not get registered properly which could cause undocumented issues.

Hope this helps.

Also check if DLC has been built because EX will wait for DLC file and DLC file can take anything from a minute to many hours.

Thanks,
Raj

Hi,

I don't know how to access you support note till it gets published on powerlink.

I tried repair install by just reinstalling the setup and choosing the Repair option. This did not help. I have removed everything, cleaned it completely including folders and registry settings and installed a fresh. I have observed it yesterday for around 1.5 hrs and the dlc file was not yet created. I have around 8500 mailboxes on the Exchange server. Now atleast the EX service start automatically on restarting the EX server.

I think dlc can take hours here. Last time it took 4 hours in a 500 user mailbox. Would even EmailXtract also work only after dlc file gets created?

Another thing I have observed here is that it does not create the Registry key IDAlgorithm. Should I create this manually?

Hi Anuj,

If I am not wrong first email that will come though will create the reg key and then I would suggesting it to change to 128 from 255 if environment has mass mailer emails coming in.

In any case for exchange its a good idea to keep ID algorithm at 128 value. More details are in the docs.

Thanks,
Raj

Thanks,

This site is helping me understand many new things. May be because normally I would install the product and test jorunaling etc. after a couple of days but here I did it immediately.

Is there any limit to how long does it take to generate a dlc file. This is around 8500 users.
