Questions about UserCache
Repeatedly we have the problem, that if a new user is logging on a machine, UserCache is not working, because config.xml is missing in his profile. Does anybody know, how the creation process for this config file is working?
At the moment we are using UserCache client always associated with the EmailXtender client. Is anybody running UserCache without the EX client?

this is a common problem. When performing the initial installation, the config.xml is created in this user profile. It is not recreated when a new user logs onto the machine. You only can copy this after the user has logged on the first time. - I have a customer, that has scripted a way to verify and copy the settings to a new user profile.
The UserCache (UC) has only one function: Caching archived information locally. The EX client without UC is responsible for shortcut resolution, search and a pdf document. It should be possible to run UC without the EX client, although I have never tried it.
Be aware, UC is giving clients and EMC lots of problems in terms of stability, compatibility and usability. The entire application is currently redeveloped with a new architecture. It's going to be called SourceOne Offline Access 6.5 Apparently SourceOne is the new name for EmailXtender. - EMC told me to wait with new implementations of UC rather than rolling the old version out today.
As this should come to market in the middle of November, I would rather wait than spent much time and energy right now. The new EX is then released in December... from what I've heard.
Hope, this information was helpful.
Kind regards,
Jochen.

Is it an upgrade for EX or does it need completely separate resources?

That is not an GA release. You will have to contact your Sales Account Manager for more information.
Thanks,
