EX-DX-Centera - want new incoming data to go to NAS, not Centera.

EmailXtender 4.81.1147

DiskXtender 6.3.2

Windows 2003

(Exchange 2003 Environment)

We currently have an EX/DX configuration with Centera as our storage location.  New incoming containers are automatically put into a monthy media group and purged to the Centera device.  I can see in DX that media groups are automatically created for each month.

We also have many NAS locations configured in DX where we move old data off the Centera as space is needed.  The data is compacted to the container volume, the move rule is changed to point to the new NAS location, and background scan takes care of the move and purge.

We now want to stop DiskXtender from automatically moving data to Centera, and move it to a NAS location.  The NAS location may change overtime, buy us creating another media group.

Where is this automatic mechanism that autocreates these media groups in DX each month?  If i can modify it to auto create NAS media groups going forward that would work for me.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi Wiser,

I believe reason for auto creation of media groups is through EX. Check EX configuration through Admin GUI and see if Media is set centera/DiskXtender instead of Hard Disk. If it is set to Hard Disk then EX do not tell DX to create media groups. But be careful while making changes, if you have a test environment you want to test on that first.

Rajan,

Thanks for your post.  Yes the Media Type in EX is set to Centera.  I wasn't sure this was the only thing needed for EX to go into DX and do it's thing.

Any comments on the below are welcome.

Our SAN/NAS location is not the container volume.  It is another volume on the same server shared out so that I could set it up as a NAS location in DX.

If this setting is changed, Monthly folders will start showing up in the Container volume as usual (i.e = EmailVault_Index_Archive_201003), but the files inside them will not be moved/offlined because the move rules in DX are not being created any longer.  I will have to manually create one move rule for every new monthly folder that EX drops into this container area. The move rules will point to the NAS location.

The good news is the pattern of EX folder names are predictible so I can create a lot of rules at once i.e for a whole year.

I see a way out of using DX all together, since I am no longer using a Centera.  I could:

- Stop all DX devices and resources in preparation for uninstalling

- Expand the container volume to a size that would hold ALL our data, or move the container volume and contents to the large SAN volume being used for NAS storage. For the second option, since it is all offline stubs the size would be minimal

- Overwrite all the offline stubs with the actual files from the NAS storage

- Uninstall DX

- When EX calls on the .emx file in the container, it can fetch what it needs (as long as the path in the container volume is the same)

Hello,

Just wanted to close this topic by stating that once I changed the media type to hard disk, the DX auto configuration did stop, and I was able to manually create move rules to move the data to a SAN location.

We are planning to remove DX from this system, and have the container volume be the final location for all our data.
