Emails in "Sent items" in the mailbox Journal

Hello,

I have many messages in Sent items in the mailbox journal.

How can I process these messages? I move some messages to the inbox folder and some of them are process but many messages return to the "Sent items" folder.

I can open these messages from "Sent items".

Regards.

Hi Pit,

what you cannot open, EX can't either.

Are your permissions on the journaling mailboxes set properly?
Is this a problem in one journal mailbox only or on multiple?
How many mails are there?
Could it be that they got somehow corrupt?
Can you move/copy the folder "sent items" to a PST-file and open it there?
If you see the header (To/From), can you look up the messages in the users mailbox and open it there?

Just a couple of ideas. Normally, I would tend to "the permissions are not set properly" or "the messages are corrupt". Difficult to diagnose from afar.

Regards, Jochen.

Hi Pit,

you are on the right track. If you have messages in the "Sent items", drag & drop to the Inbox is the way to go.

What version of EX are you running?
Do you have one journaling mailbox or multiple?
Is something common about the messages?

I had problems with messages, that e.g. had no Send or To address, an empty msg attachment (due to a anti virus product in the firewall of the customer), etc. This was partly resolved with new EX versions.

Once, I could archive journal emails when draging/dropping them to a differnent journal mailbox (this worked only seldom).

Hope, this is helpful for your.

Kind regards,
Jochen.

I think that e-mails are corrupt.

Moreover, I have many, many messages in "Sent items" folder with a/several attachment with 64B. I have thousands messages as these.

Why cann't I procces that messages? Would I need to speak with people in Exchange?

Regards.

EX can't read corrupt messages. Try to delete them! ;-) Would be interesting though why this is the case.

64KB is an indication that the attachments were emptied. Was the same for me. The customer assumed that the attachments were removed by a third party AV app. He never really solved this...

Yes, talk to somebody from Exchange and check as to why this is the case. - You see a copy of the message in the journaling mailbox. I would check for one/two messages that the original recipient(s) have the identical message (with the empty attachments). => Then you know/can prove EX is not the reaon that causes this.

These messages don't get archived by EX. You would need to speak to EMC Support about the reasons. - Would be nice if you could post your resolution/what support told you.

Regards, Jochen.

I have somewhat similar problem like Pit. I have three Journal mailboxes and in the each mailbox I have couple dozen or hundred emails per week in Sent Items folder which are not processed. EMC support told me to just drag and drop those mails to  Inbox folder. But, it doesn't help every time. Now, I copy emails to the local disk (msg files), and after that drag and drop them to the Inbox folder.

Is there  any better solution fot this?

Thnx in advance

Does your workaround works (drag & drop to local disk and afterwards move them back to the inbox?)

I've seen this issue as well and could be explained as follows:

- When - somehow - a message doesn't get journaled correctly by SourceOne, it moves those messages to the Sent Items folder.

Noteworthy to mention is that the activity freezes for one hour after it has a 'failed message' because it tries to reprocess that message for an hour... Which causes a backlog to fill up of course.

BenCs,

Thanks for your reply. Answer is yes. It does work, but it is soo stupid to this once a week or even month. I mean it is boring and time consuming. I can do something „smarter“ than copy emails. Obviously, it is a stupid bug and support should fix it somehow. I am considering to make a script which will use MAPI to copy and delete emails.

Greetings,

There are few scenarios where there could be such issues.

1. Exchange 2013 had an issue that was recently fixed (I believe in September/October CU). It helped many customers to process certain messages that would not process in past.

2. In certain cases while message is in Exchange Store it could be missing certain properties which will not allow messages to be exported to file system which SourceOne needs to do for archiving messages. In such cases if you move/copy messages from mailbox to a PST and then back to Inbox of journal mailbox those copies will process. What happens is that when message is written to PST, Outlook will try to stamp certain properties which could be missing to allow message to be exported. In certain cases it may as well be date/time related properties. This is why you will see messages gets processed if you export to PST/file system and then import those back. There is little that could be done about this other than using workaround to have a copy archived. You also need to be aware that while doing these moves because some properties gets stamped or changed, that may impact how message will be archived.

3. If you come across messages that you may export to PST/file system but could not be processed after they are imported back then you should contact DELL EMC SourceOne Support to have those looked into.
