Does EX support and use Outlook Categories ?
Hello,
In Outlook 2007 our people use the Category function.
You can assign several Categories to each email.
What happens to Outlook Category when that email is copied into the EX email archive system ?
Does the item in the archive system have that attribute ?
Can we use EX search to look for a particular Outlook Category ?
Outlook 2007
Exchange 2003 and Exchange 2007
EmailXtender 4.81 patch 655.
Centera disk.
Thanks.

I do not know if EX will be keeping record of Categody data (at least when I am writing it).
To my understaning EX keep copy of a message as you will have if you drag and drop a message from outlook to a windows folder.
If the category is part of the message then I believe it would be saved as it is in the EX server. But should users will change category, EX will not archive those because it already has the copy (unless the property is part of ID algorithm used that will result into different message ID).
At this stage EX Search plug-in to my understaning does not allow search messages by category only.
I believe if you need a official answer you should contact EMC EmailXtender Support and they will be able to provide you all the relevent information.
Thanks,
Rajan

We're using EX shurtcutting and have the same issue with Outlook attributes. In our case this is not "Categories" but "Flag Status".

interesting that EMC told you they wanted to do anything... this is an old issue and in my opinion this cannot be included in the current architecture.
Reason:
- EX archives the entire messages including the user MAPI properties.
- When archiving a message, this information is archived in its entierty; but subsequent messages from other users with different categories/flags are ignored as the message is (basically) the same. The other information based on different users is ignored...
- When having shortcutted mails including the mailbody, every user whatever category/flag they had initially will receive the category/flag the message was archived with.
This happend me when ingesting PST data or old mailbox data of users.
=> Therefore EMC recommends to use journal archiving. <- a journaled message has no category/flag set.
=> Therefore EMC recommends to NOT to shortcut the mailbody.<- the user mapi properties are retained for the user.
So, this is an issue for many people, but in my opinion can only be solved with the next version ES1. I wouldn't get my hopes up.
Hope that helps,
Jochen.
