Where should I start to understand SMARTs InCharge?

I am an absolute beginner in Network Management and have no prior experience whatsoever - I hope someone can help me out with this. I am interested in understanding the semantics behind SMARTs, especially that behind a table called IC_T_NOTIFICATION_OCCURRENCES. It contains numerous fields like:

  • ELEMENTINSTANCE
  • ELEMENTCLASS
  • NOTIFIEDAT
  • CLEAREDAT
  • ...

What are some good resources/tutorials to learn the fundamentals specific to SMARTs? For instance, I want to be able to answer the following:

  • What are events and alarms?
  • How to identify a unique event?
  • What is the difference between NOTIFIEDAT and CREATEDAT?

And other similar questions. I came across this guide that explains some of my questions but am looking for more in-depth documentation on the system (from a topology perspective, where to the monitors sit and how is syslog connected to SMARTs etc.). Any suggestions on how to proceed?

Hi

  • Is the only events, symptoms and problem and no alarms. Event (notification) is something that u can see in Notification Log Console.
  • Uniq event is instance of class ICS_Notification, each instance of this class is uniq. u can run next command to get all events "dmctl -s getI ICS_Notification |more
  • NotifiedAt is a time when notification NOTIFY after next polling cycle, createdAt is a time when notificatoin is created.

Guide that u use is very old.

If do you want to know about how syslog connect to SAM u shoud to read Administration Guide of SAM

Your question is a very generic one.

First check if you have access to smarts documentation. Most of it can be found in support.emc.com.

SMARTS versions are now named IONIX for IT operations intelligence. Can search with that too.

Most of your questions about notifications can be answered from Service assurance manager user guide of IONIX.

for starters,

createdat is when the alarm is created in ionix. The alrm can be repeated on the ionix, which is shown by notifiedat.

Hi John,

As Shyamajaya pointed it out, most of your questions can be answered by:

- Documentation

- KBs

- White papers

There is also an EMC Smart course that you can sign up for, there is a cost involved but nevertheless such course exist.

Also, you can search for Ionix/ITOI/Smarts and under support.emc.com, they all point to the same location. Don't let the name distract you, code is the same.

Do you have access to any of the documentation? Have you searched through our KBs? Is there anything specific that you are looking for that you haven't found an answer for which I may be able to help?

The Smarts courses from EMC Education Services are called Ionix IP Manager Administrator and Ionix Service Assurance Manager Administrator which come in both ILT (Instructor Led Training) and VILT (Video ILT).

Let me know if you have any questions,

Hello Pedro,

Since I don't see your name on this post, it may be because you are subscribed to this forum. I recommend to check and make sure to turn "Email Notification" off.
