EMC Smarts and Application Performance Monitoring
I would like to use Smarts, if possible, to view performance from the perspective of the application. In other words, what does the response time of the application feel like from inside the OS.
How feasible is this?
What kind of metrics to I need to look at in Smarts?
Thanks!

Hello Notofearth,
Unfortunately I am not aware of any application performance monitoring software that is offered by the Smarts product. As for trying to build such a feature into Smarts. It may be possible, but I would not consider it very feasible.
What would be required is for the host to have method of presenting data for the Smarts software to read be that through the SNMP agent, a syslog, or some sort of java adapter. Then you would need to modify the Smarts software (most likely Smarts IP, ESM, or ACM) to be able to identify the data being present by the host and manipulate the data so that it can be represented in the Smarts software and alerted on. This type of work would incorporate dynamic modelling, scripting, and possibly java programming to fetch the data from the host if it is not placed on the SNMP response.
This is a lot of customization and customizations are not supported by the EMC technical support group. Your best bet would be to engage professional services to see if they could develop a solution for you.
I hope this answers your question.
Cheers,
Sean
