Dummy discovery using SMARTS 7.0.1.0

Hi,

I'm using EMC SMARTS 7.0.1.0 for Network discovery.

We have a failover servers which is accesssed using a virtual IP. The virtual IP in turn routes the traffic based on the load for the underlying servers.

The discovery is done using the virtual IP. However the virtual IP is not set on the physical server  interfaces and because of this it gives discovery error for the actual IPs discovered.

Can we do a dummy discovery, i.e map the Physical IPs/hosts to the managed device discovered using the virtual IP.

I am not sure I get why you would want to discover with the Virtual IP.  Since it is non-unique and is observed as a mechanism to get to more than one device, the system will likely either declare the IP as a duplicate (and give errors regarding no qualified access address found) or will be in a state of deleting one and replacing it with another.  Since the Virtual IP may move, it will also indicate that your device can never be down unless all of the members of the set are all unreachable at the same time.

Why not seed the system with the real IP addresses of the systems you actually want to manage?  All of the solutions we have today (MSFT clustering support, VRRP, HSRP, etc.) are focused on that principle - find the addresses used by the real devices and manage them with optional support to manage the virtual IP independent of the devices.
