BIM in a nutshell:

- is not a separate module to install but part of SAM server (activated by license)
- allows you define customers and services and relationships/dependencies between services to objects in SAM (Routers, Applications, etc.)
- when there is a problem with a dependent object, service and customer impacted notifications are created
- you can create these via Topology builder UI, or programmatically or a config file.

For more information look at the SAM documentation.

What kind of material?
BIM stands for Business Impact Module
It does create a business map of your organization and raise alarms based on infrastructure problems.
There is some information regarnig this in sMARTS documentation which is in the install directory

cheers
