AgentAdress and AgentAdressList

I have a question about attributes AgentAddress and AgentAddressList of object SNMPAgent::SNMPAgent-hostname

I guess SNMP queries from Smarts default use the AgentAddress attribute as their target when polling a device. This address is also the first address in the AgentAddressList. But in our installation we observed in some cases that other addresses from the list were used (at random?).

Can someone explain how Smarts decides which address to use for its SNMP queries? And how is this AgentAddressList composed? We observed that it contains some of the IP addresses of the device, but not all. And above all some of the addresses in the list would fail because of restrictions in our network, so they should not be used anyway.

Hi Jon56,

from my understanding and experience (not from the doc ...) :
the AgentAddress is the one used by the SNMP polling to get the OIDs from the device. If there is no more answer from the AgentAddress IP then the domain manager is trying another address from the AgentAddressList (not a virtual IP though, loopback address prefered). There is no "return to first AgentAddress used when possible". So this should explain why sometimes you have the AgentAddress changed.

HTH,
