Version of ESRS Client for VNX deployment
Hi,
I work for a Velocity Partner and have just configured a new VNX 5300. SMTP dial home is up and running but I would like to enable ESRS as it seems like a better option for support. I would like some clarity on what the procedure is from a customer point of view because from my understanding ESRS can be deployed by the "customer" for VNX. We are not clear which version of ESRS IP client is current for the VNX. No ESRS client software shipped with the hardware and the only version of the IP client I can see on support or partner web is 1.1.32 and this version does not seem to install onto Windows 2008 R2 64bit. How does the customer or myself obtain the correct version of the ESRS IP client, version 2 documentation on Powerlink state that it is available from support.emc.com!
We would like to make sure that all our customer's VNXs are supported by this software but I think more clarity on what the processes are for deployment with VNX is needed.
Anyone else had these sort of issues ?

ESRS is bundled with the VNX management tools and can be configured directly on the VNX management station. Try to use the following links to access the ESRS for VNX technical documentation (Powerlink credentials are required):
ESRS for VNX Requirements and Installation
ESRS for VNX Release Notes
Please let me know if this is the material you are looking for, or if there is anything else I can provide to help out. Good luck!

Hi Ben,
Thanks for the links. It was not obvious to me as no bundled software was supplied, what the correct version for the VNX actually was. It is confusing that documentation on Powerlink refers to v2 which I assumed to be the latest version. I am downgrading the OS to those listed for this version and will try again!
many thanks
Mike

To clarify further, there are two options for VNX...
The links I provided are for configuration directly on the management station. Here, ESRS is co-located with other management tools. This configuration is appropriate for an environment with only VNX (or CLARiiON) products.
If the environment includes a mix of EMC systems, the recommended ESRS configuration is to utilize a dedicated Gateway server (physical or virtual). The Gateway configuration does require separate software to be ordered, and is aligned with the v2.xx documentation you found on Powerlink.
Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any additional questions.

Hi Mike,
I suspect the issue "does not seem to install onto Windows 2008 R2 64bit." is that the ESRS IP Client you would have installed does not support 2008 R2. As of today with Version 1.2.0.1.0554 the ESRS IP Client now supports Windows 7 and 2008 R2. Below is from the release notes.
The following operating systems are supported :
• Windows XP Professional with SP3 (32-bit)
• Windows Server 2003 with SP2 (32-bit and 64-bit)
• Windows Server 2003 R2 with SP2 (32-bit and 64-bit)
• Windows Server 2008 with SP2 (32-bit and 64-bit)
• Windows Vista with SP2 (32-bit and 64-bit)
• VMware ESX 3.5, 3.0, 3i and above (with above guest OS)
• Microsoft Hyper-V Guest OS Windows Server 2003 with SP2 (32-bit and 64-bit)
• Windows 7
• Windows Server 2008 R2
ESRS IP Client is not supported on the following operating system:
Windows 8
ESRS IP Client is fully compatible with JRE 1.6.21 or newer.
EMC suggests that you use JRE 1.6.026 because earlier versions of the JRE have performance and security issues. Optimally other JREs should be uninstalled, and only one JRE should be installed on the station running the ESRS IP Client Suite. JRE version 1.7 is not supported.
