ESRS v2.20 now available
ESRS version 2.20 is now available.
A major enhancement has been made with ESRS v2.20. It is now qualified on existing ESRS-enabled products to operate utilizing Enterprise Red Hat Linux (v.6.2, 32-bit).
As a result of support for both Linux and Windows, there are now two new sets of technical documentation for this release, which should be posted to www.support.emc.com shortly:
1. Operations Guide - ESRS Gateway for Windows / Linux
2. ESRS Customer Environment Check Tool (CECT) for Windows / Linux
Please reply with any feedback or questions.

Hello Ben,
is Policy Manager supported on Linux as well ? Is there a migration path to go from Windows based HA ESRS to Linux based ?
Thank you

Hello
There is no path to either convert or migrate. When the documentation is posted to powerlink, there will be a procedure to install the Gateway CLient. You can install this like a windows based gateway. As to the question on HA Cluster configuration, this is handled using the same method as if you were using two windows based machines. You just have to ensure that one of the gateways has no managed devices before you attempt to create the Cluster.

Hello
There is no Linux based Policy manager. The new Linux Gateway Client allows you to connect to a windows based policy manager. The ESRS Linux Operations Guide will have a documented procedure on how to establish the connection between gateway client and policy manager.
Thanks

ok, so i could "join" this Linux gateway to my existing HA cluster, once i do that devices will automatically show up on this gateway. At this point i have a cluster that has 3 gateways(Windows, Windows and Linux). Would i go ahead and add the second Linux gateway to the same cluster and then remove both Windows gateways or should i first remove one/both of the Windows gateways before adding the second Linux gateway.
Thank you for your time explaining this, this is something that i will need to present and explain to management when filling out change control documentation.

To add a Linux server to an existing cluster, the Linux Gateway would have to be installed and not have any devices deployed to it. Then you would create a cluster in Servicelink using the serial number of the Linux Gateway with any current windows servers to form a cluster.

so how would you advise your customers to proceed, if someone who has an HA cluster and would like to take advantage of 2.20. I would like to maintain ESRS connectivity while i am "migrating" to Linux based gateways. Can Linux based gateway and Windows based gateway participate in HA config ? I can't just rip everything out and spend half a day configuring brand new gateways.
Thanks

replace windows gateways with Linux gateways (less patching, more reliable).
Current config:
2 Sites, each site has a pair of windows gateways, 1 policy manager.
Thanks

I would add the second linux gateway and then remove one windows server at a time.
Thanks

Any chance there is progress toward enabling real HA for the Policy Managers as well? This was been talked about for two years now but I still haven't seen any progress. The process for keeping a second policy manager server up to date and then reconfigure the Gateways to use it if there is a failure on the primary is starting to be somewhat of a long running joke.
If this got addressed already and I missed it I apologize.

Hi Allen, thank you for the question. Yes, HA Policy Managers have been discussed in great detail but unfortunately due to other priorities it is not currently part of the ESRS roadmap. I have forwarded your note to the team that is responsible for this work, which may help to make it a higher priority.

Thanks Ben,
I don't suppose you can point me to someone who might be attending EMC World who I can meet with to discuss this. I talked to someone about it there two years ago and it was on the roadmap and a lot of people in the room with me agreed that it needed to be done. But no action appears to have been taken. I'm not sure the people making the choices on this understand that having HA gateways and not HA Policy Managers is an absolute waste. If you rely on the policy managers the redundant gateways still leave you with a huge Single Point of Failure.
OK, maybe not and "absolute waste", but a lot of the value of HA gateways is lost if you stil rely on a single Policy server with a rather sad documented process for maintaining and failing over to a "secondary".

Could you provide me with the steps to find this in the download area? I'm just getting around to setting up ESRS and can't find it. I went to powerlink which directed me to support.emc.com/downloads/, searched for ESRS, matched on "EMC Secure Remote Support; ESRS", but all I see available are the check tool, patches, GatewayUpgrade and Policy Manager.
Edit: never mind, I contacted support and was told only partners can download it. I'm going to get the local field team to help.
