Migration to SCG for VxRail and Stand-Alone PowerEdge Servers

Hi,

We currently have 4 VxRail clusters and 5 stand-alone PowerEdge servers. VxRail is set up with direct connectivity to Dell, but we now want to transition to SCG.

Regarding the stand-alone servers, we have Basic support on these now, but are looking into ProSupport, and our only requirement is that they are monitored so that if any hardware fails, a support case is automatically created with Dell. Additionally, we need to upgrade the firmware on these servers.

There are ongoing discussions about whether we need SCG+OME or if SCG alone is sufficient. When it comes to VxRail, I don’t see the point in implementing OME.

Since we only have 5 stand-alone servers, we should be able to upgrade the firmware directly via iDRAC, right? And if we connect these servers to SCG, hardware failure information will automatically be sent to Dell Support? (if we have ProSupport i guess)

Additionally, there is CloudIQ (though I’m unsure about the monitoring and alerting capabilities it provides), but as I understand it, both VxRail and stand-alone PowerEdge servers can be connected to CloudIQ. This should also be free of charge, correct? I also believe I read somewhere that there is a mobile app for this?

So, the main question is: What would we be missing if we don’t use OME? We don’t need the extra features like deployment, vCenter integration, firmware patching multiple servers etc.

Thanks for any comments

/R

Hi Andreas,

For your stand-alone PowerEdge servers, SCG can also be used to monitor hardware and automatically create support cases with Dell if you have ProSupport.

With ProSupport, your servers will be monitored, and any hardware failures will automatically trigger a support case with Dell.

You can indeed upgrade the firmware directly via iDRAC for your stand-alone servers.

SCG should be sufficient for your needs if you do not require the additional features provided by OME such as deployment, vCenter integration, and firmware patching for multiple servers.

Implementing OME for VxRail might not be necessary if you are only looking for basic monitoring and support capabilities.
If you decide not to use OME, you might miss out on Centralized Management
However, if your primary need is monitoring and automated support case creation, SCG alone should suffice.

I hope this helps! If you have any more questions or need further clarification, feel free to ask.
