Discuses and share finding on Intel HANA whitepaper
Couple days ago, I received this whitepaper from Intel and take some time to read. Some of chapter is quite valuable to resolve my understanding gap on HANA. I attached this article on this post and speak my find to discuss.
When I attended SAP TechED BJ, on HANA session, it addressed HAPA using both of
Software innovation: partition, column-based store, compression, etc.
Hardware innovation: 64bit, parallel computing, partition etc
But did not go deeply to address how it works.
You could directly go the following chapter to find answers if you don’t like “Intel specific” words.
Chapter 3 is about column-based store, compression
Chapter 4.2 is about parallel computing, partition.
I also find HANA system is NUMA aware system and leveraging Intel chip based fault isolation tech, which is/was widely used on expensive Unix system, a bit surprised with this. This does matter improving whole system stability.
I am big NAHA virtualization fan, after seeing that many feature related with chip tech, such as NUMA, SSE, HT, etc. I am wondering that. But to vShpere 5, it does support these chip tech, still get chance.
Looking forward to your reply.
