Snapshot

Hi, Does a Snapshot have the ability in itself to protect the data or does it have to be integrated with availble backups like networker is using now? Moin

snapshot is like backup on disk/online and networker helps to send the backup to tape/offline. But networker  should allow configuring a disk/file system to be a target instead of a tape drive. I know Netbackup allows this. Most of the snapshots has a retention policy and you need to check this out to identfy how long the data will be available online. Snapshots can be  created with both block(FC?) and file(NAS) based technology. my understanding the snap shot created at block level may not be human readable and needs a backup tool for both backup and recovery. But some arrays has native backup/restore(dump/restore) which does allows to restore from the snapshot directly.
