Xtremio to VNX replication
Hi, Can anyone confirm if it is possible to replicate multiple Xtremio arrays to a single VNX box using RPA. Is that technically viable and are there any license limitations??

Hi there,
That is correct, RP currently supports 1:2 or 2:1 with XtremIO (3 clusters in a system). In your case, it looks like 1:4 so I would recommend filing a RPQ to further validate that 4:1/1:4 can be approved for your configuration.

Hi,
Yes, this is technically possible. Proper sizing exercise should be followed to also make sure the target VNX can sustain the workload.
In terms of licensing, RP/EX is required.

Hello,
Yes, this is possible and supported with a max of 4 XtremIO arrays per RP cluster I believe. Check out the release notes for the version of RP you are at (4.1.2 is the min required for XtremIO replication). There is also the XtremIO deployment notes with RP that is a good read to go over the install and design requirements depending on how you plan or want to create the CG's on the source side for any limitations.
Here is the deployment guide: https://support.emc.com/docu59769_RecoverPoint-Deploying-with-XtremIO-Tech-Notes.pdf?language=en_US

thanks guys...we are trying around several solutions for xtremio local/remote recovery, any idea how many vnx arrays could be part of RPA along with the 5 xtremio possible as per the deployment guide...we might go for a cascaded solution of 5 xtremio clusters to vnx which further gets replicated into remote side vnx box, xtremio cluster cannot be replicated to 2 vnx boxes concurrently so this is the only option, would it be viable?? any suggestions,recommendations...

An RP Cluster is basically the site, since cluster refers to the grouping of RPA's in a site managed together and an RP system is when you connect multiple clusters to each other for remote replication and manage that as a larger entity.
The Max per RP cluster for XtremIO splitters is 4
The Max per RP Cluster for VNX splitters is 10
In terms of your replication scenario, there is no cascaded replication in the sense that Site A replicates to Site B and then the replica at Site B will seed Site C. This is where you use multi-site configurations so that Site A will have multiple copies...one to Site B and one to Site C. The max fan-out for multi-site is 1:4 or 4:1. In your situation, if you want to replicate a single XtremIO to 2 VNXs and the RP system is comprised of 2 Sites, this will be possilble where you have 2 copies (max) for one production LUN, with each replica being on a different VNX at your target cluster.
Make sure to check out the RP release notes for the version you are working with in terms of the configuration maximums to ensure you are not exceeding them in your design.
Also, another document that is helpful to describe the replication topologies for XtremIO is this one - this should answer your questions above as well: https://support.emc.com/docu60636_RecoverPoint-Replication-of-XtremIO.pdf?language=en_US

thanks keith, wish u a very happy new year
I talked about cascaded replication because RPA deployment guide says that Xtremio cluster can only be replicated to 2 arrays if one of them is xtremio, since concurrent replication to 2 VNX arrays will not be possible hence the cascaded replication will be the only choice. Issue is I am not getting any documentation on cascaded Xtremio replication solution. Is the scenario of 4 Xtremio clusters replication to a local VNX array(local replication) and then that VNX box getting replicated to remote VNX viable??? any thoughts...!!

Hi,
1. Yes - XtremIO can be protected locally to VNX and to any array supported e.g. heterogenous replication is fully supported in XtremIO snap-based replication
2. 4 as well
3. Yes, assuming per a given CG copy - there's only 1 XtremIO array (cannot mix multiple XtremIO arrays in the same copy)
4. Yes
5. RP doesn't support cascaded replication. There's no problem replicating to VNX and from that VNX to another remote one just for different set of volumes and CGs.
Hope that helps,

Hi,
Thanks a lot for the clarity. Since 4 Xtremio clusters are supported on a RPA, I can put all 4 as source to a destination VNX i.e 4:1, in that context what was meant by "RP currently supports 1:2 or 2:1 with XtremIO (3 clusters in a system)" as you said in the earlier post.

Hi,
My previous statement on 1:2/2:1 supportability with XtremIO was referring to cluster topology so you can have a maximum of 3 clusters in a RP system with XtremIO.
If you are planning to have 4 XtremIO clusters on 1 RP cluster replicating to another RP cluster that's 1:1 (can replicate to two remote copies on the same target cluster).
One thing I got to stress here, a copy cannot span more than 1 XtremIO array so in your case, as long as you're replicating different CGs for these 4 XtremIO arrays then no problem.
Make sure to check out the RecoverPoint and XtremIO Scale and Performance guide available on support.emc.com and in general, perform proper sizing to make sure data from these 4 XtremIO arrays can be replicated by 1 RP cluster, among other design outputs.
Hope that helps,
Idan

Hi,
Got it, we plan to replicate 4 xtremio clusters to 1 local VNX and 1 remote VNX so that way i guess it also will be 1:1 as local copy wont require separate RP cluster.I think that we can use single XMS server for registering multiple xtremio clusters so as to bypass the cap of 4 xtremio clusters per RPA,got loads of xtremio clusters.
Also, suppose I have 2:1 topology,so I have 8(4*2) xtremio clusters at source, will the destination RP be able to handle 8 array clusters as an RPA can handle only 4 clusters.

Hi,
You cannot bypass the 4 XtremIO clusters per RP cluster limit by using a multi-cluster XMS. Although we fully support multiple clusters per XMS, we are still limiting 4 XtremIO arrays per RP cluster, if you need more than a RPQ would be needed to properly assess the required scalability.
Also on 4*2, if you mean 4 dual-brick XtermIO arrays then NP with that (same with 2 quad-brick arrays). For any number above 4 XtremIO clusters per RPA cluster would need a RPQ.

Idan
