RP Typology

Most of the RP document is talking about 3 sites setup.   I was wondering does RP support this kind of typology.

Basically the scenario is existing setup involving SITE A > SITE B, we need to migrate data from Site A to Site C.    We also need to replicate a copy from Site C to new DR site at Site D.

Site A > Site B

Site A > Site C

Site C > Site D

My plan is from Site A existing CG (already replicated to Site B), add a copy to replicate to Site C.   Once the site C replication is done, I will perform a failover from Site A to Site C, get rid of site B.   setup the CG to replicate from site C to site D.

I assume you’re referring to traditional RP (not RPVM). In traditional RP, you can have up to 5 clusters per system. Take a look at the RP Multisite WP, it talks about DC migration (Prod and DR) and has a scenario similar to yours. Keep in mind that when adding additional copies, you need to factor in RP and network resources.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.   The scenario mentioned in the WP is mostly fan-in/fan-out typology.   I have come out with a diagram to explain my scenario.

Basically Site A and Site B are the existing site.   I need to migrate both Site A & B to site C & D.   During the migration period, customer could provision new storage and new CG in site C and replicate to Site D.

My concern here:

1. The WP mentioned 5 cluster per system.  Can I have Site C & D setup and use the connect cluster wizard to connect site C cluster to Site A and Site D cluster to site C?

2. To migrate Site A data to Site C, I will add a copy and let the CG1 replicate to site C.   During the cutover, I will perform failover, cut off site B and start a new DR copy to Site D.  Once the copy is done at Site D, drop off site A.   My question is before the cutover can I at the same time start another CG by using the replica copy and fire the replica copy to site D.

Hi there,

1. Yes.

2. No, because source volumes can only reside in one CG.
