Remote Proactive (RCM) RecoverPoint team introduction
Remote Proactive (RCM) RecoverPoint team introduction
This article will introduce EMC Remote Proactive RecoverPoint team’s working process and provided services etc.
Detailed Information
Remote Proactive RecoverPoint team responsibilities:
Remote Proactive RecoverPoint team is providing the upgrades, preparation for upgrade, and maintenance for RecoverPoint product.
Since RecoverPoint is able to integrate with VPLEX now, so more and more companies want to upgrade their RecoverPoint to a new version and collaborate with VPLEX.
RecoverPoint upgrading:
The latest RecoverPoint version is 4.1.SP1.P1. RecoverPoint upgrade has to be done incrementally. For example, if the current version is 3.4, the customer wants to upgrade to version 4.1. So, we cannot use the 4.1 upgrade packages to upgrade RecoverPoint from 3.4 to 4.1 directly. We must upgrade RecoverPoint from 3.4 to 3.5 first, and then upgrade from 3.5 to 4.0. Then finally upgrade from 4.0 to 4.1. This entire upgrade process includes 3 version upgrades.
Version upgrades previous to RecoverPoint 4.1 for two sites only require one of the sites to be upgraded. However, starting from RecoverPoint 4.1, each site has to be upgraded separately. It means after we've done a site upgrade, we need to run the same upgrade process for the other site. So, the upgrade time will be longer than before.
The upgrade time of RecoverPoint is mainly based on RPA quantity at each site. If the entire upgrade process went smoothly, with a minimum 2 RPA per a site, each upgrade requires a minimum of 3 hours. And as the number of RPA increase, the upgrade time will increased.
RecoverPoint upgrades are accomplished through the Deployment Manager tool, and this tool is unable to achieve through ESRS. So, RP remote upgrade only supports WebEX.
RecoverPoint upgrade is non-distributive, if the upgrade process is in trouble, we would escalate the issue to our RP support team, and they will help us to solve the problem as soon as possible.
Preparations before RecoverPoint upgrading:
When upgrading RecoverPoint, we need to submit the corresponding RecoverPoint CCA. After the RecoverPoint CCA is approved, we can help customers to schedule the upgrade time. For L4 customers, our Remote Proactive (RCM) team will help customer to provide CCA and arrange the upgrade time. For other customers, CE will help customers to submit CCA and arrange for the upgrade time.
Before upgrading, the customer needs to download the corresponding upgrade package and Deployment Manager tools. Deployment Manager also runs on Java 7.0, so the customer needs to install Java 7.0 on the server before the upgrade.
The user needs to apply the corresponding license from license team before upgrading. Each version install needs a license, it will be marked in the CCA approval mail. So when your CCA was approved, you need to carefully read the CCA Approval mail, there are upgrading notices etc.
RecoverPoint upgrade process:
1. On the day of upgrade, the engineer will send a WebEx link to the customer through mail and wait for the customer to join.
2. After the customer joins, the engineers will do a health check to ensure that the upgrade can go on normally.
3. Run Deployment Manager, and enter the necessary information asked and follow the steps to continue. This tool will do a health check again and eventually start the upgrade process.
4. Restart each RPA after the upgrade is complete.
5. When the entire upgrade is finished, the engineer will check the health status of RecoverPoint, and let the customer do a simple test to ensure RecoverPoint can operate normally.
