RecoverPoint SE and CE

Greetings,

We are going to deploy RecoverPoint/SE with VNX 2 storage array. we have 3 hyper-v hosts that will be distributed between Head office and DR site as follows :

- 2 hosts @ the main site.

- 1 host @ the DR site.

I just found that there is an extension (plug-in) for Microsoft Failover cluster and RecoverPoint/SE, this plug-in is cluster enabler.

it extends failover cluster to include DR site in a Geocluster (multi-site cluster).

Could you please share with me your thoughts and comments about MS failover cluster and EMC cluster enabler, in addition i found that the latest release of CE is back to the last year and there is no update.

finally, does the CE support Windows 2012 R2 and CSV?

Thanks,

Two comments here.

Firstly, Windows 2012 R2 has not been qualified with RP/CE. Secondly, as an FYI, RP/CE is not supported with RP version 4.1 and will go EOL with RP version 4.0.

Thank you for your reply.

well, what could be the alternative solution in that case?? we need to utilize the RecoverPoint\SE appliances in each site.

if we use the RP/SE to maintain the CRR replication then what is the tool may help me in disaster recovery/ do we need to script the process / should we create Lun\Consistency group per virtual machine.

thanks in advance,

If you require an automated method then VPLEX Metro would be the solution otherwise a scripted solution could also work.

In addition to Rich's response about VPLEX as an automated solution for continuous availability, you could leverage some scripting or manual intervention in the event of a disaster. Not sure what versions you are using of Hyper-V, but with RecoverPoint alone and the usage of CSV's and/or NPIV on the VM's themselves, you could automate the failover and recovery/import with powershell through SCVMM most likely. I have done this and tested it manually. With Windows 2012/Hyper-V the import process on the target side (requires your target setup to be installed and running as a Hyper-V setup), can be driven through a wizard to import the replicated VM's once the CSV's/ClusterDisks are presented to the DR Hyper-V setup.

The process would essentially require that you enable and image or failover the RP CG, present the DR LUNs to the target cluster, import those LUNs and add them to the Cluster (redo any names and CSV properties as desired to match the source for smooth import process), and then use the import wizard to search and import the VM's on those DR LUNs into the cluster.

Here is a screenshot of the import wizard on the DR site once the DR LUNs were presented to it DR cluster and imported/renamed (too many screenshots from the doc to upload through this site since it is tough to upload documents in replies):

The end result on this was that after import, the VM was started and was in a crash consistent state from the source side.

thank you so much Keith.

Perfect, we will be using windows 2012 R2 ( 2 hosts in HQ and single one in DR).

in case we implement CSV in the main site between the two nodes and three VMs with their vhd disks are located in that CSV LUN. RP will do its job to replicate the LUN to the remote location. if we enable image access and present the replicated LUN to the single node there. does that single node in DR understand the CSV ?? if not, should we follow the design of One Lun per VM and CSV is not involved.

is it possible to share with me your configuration and scripts??

Thank you,

Hi,

On the target side, you will likely need to create the cluster out of that one server and enable Hyper-V in order to bring in those cluster disks and turn them into CSV's prior to importing the VM's. I haven't tested that config recently, but I think you can do that with a single node for an environment like what you have. I am pretty sure I did this for a customer back in the day with Windows 2008 R2...would have to check my docs.

I don't have any scripts for the 2012 failover like we are talking about, but I can share the manual steps/screenshots from my document if you want to shoot me an offline message.

Glad it helped!
